But these water disasters are also posing a more insidious threat to the Bangladeshi people: arsenic contamination.

Around 49 per cent of the country’s <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2023//03//21//hundreds-of-millions-of-children-at-risk-from-inadequate-or-unsafe-drinking-water/">drinking/a>/strong> well water - which almost everyone drinks - has unsafe limits of carcinogenic arsenic.

And a new study has found that the climate crisis is making the situation worse - pointing to a looming public health crisis in Bangladesh.

Related

<a class="c-widget-related__article" href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2024//01//09//bottled-water-contains-100-times-more-plastic-nanoparticles-than-previously-thought/">Bottled water contains 100 times more plastic nanoparticles than previously thought

<a class="c-widget-related__article" href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2024//01//15//i-am-more-worried-than-ever-scientists-explain-why-record-shattering-2023-heat-has-them-on/">/u2018I am more worried than ever’: Scientists explain why record-shattering 2023 heat has them on edge

“Issues such as arsenic and climate change is inflaming an already dire situation in Bangladesh,” Md Tahmidul Islam, technical lead at WaterAid Bangladesh, tells Euronews Green.

<a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2024//01//16//tropical-cyclone-belal-human-caused-climate-change-is-increasing-storm-intensity-in-indian/">Cyclones/strong>/a>, floods, parching heat are all intensifying, tearing up homes, toilets, roads, farmland. With clean water always the first thing to go, this reality is leaving almost 26 million people being exposed to saline water and struggling to survive.

Why are Bangladeshis drinking water poisoned with arsenic?

Arsenic is naturally present at high levels in the groundwater of a number of countries, including <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2021//09//29//views-from-the-global-south-how-to-decolonise-the-climate-crisis/">Bangladesh/strong>/a>, Argentina, Cambodia, Chile, China, India, Mexico, Pakistan, the US and Vietnam.

Bangladesh’s problem with the toxic contaminant dates back to the 1970s, when there was a concerted effort to move the population away from drinking polluted surface water in which waterborne diseases spread.

The government, UN aid agencies and NGOS installed around 10 million drinking water wells in the country, which succeeded in lowering the devastatingly high rate of child deaths.

But by the 1990s it became clear that the water drawn from sedimentary rocks contained high levels of inorganic arsenic. Around 97 per cent of Bangladesh’s 165 million strong population still drink well water, however.

<img class="widgetImage__image" loading="lazy" src=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////static.euronews.com//articles//stories//08//18//07//44//808x539_cmsv2_7781915b-a832-57be-ae4f-228737a801e0-8180744.jpg/" alt="A woman walks back after collecting drinking water from a tubewell on the outskirts of Dhaka, 2016." srcset="https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/08/18/07/44/384x256_cmsv2_7781915b-a832-57be-ae4f-228737a801e0-8180744.jpg 384w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/08/18/07/44/640x427_cmsv2_7781915b-a832-57be-ae4f-228737a801e0-8180744.jpg 640w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/08/18/07/44/750x500_cmsv2_7781915b-a832-57be-ae4f-228737a801e0-8180744.jpg 750w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/08/18/07/44/828x552_cmsv2_7781915b-a832-57be-ae4f-228737a801e0-8180744.jpg 828w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/08/18/07/44/1080x720_cmsv2_7781915b-a832-57be-ae4f-228737a801e0-8180744.jpg 1080w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/08/18/07/44/1200x800_cmsv2_7781915b-a832-57be-ae4f-228737a801e0-8180744.jpg 1200w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/08/18/07/44/1920x1280_cmsv2_7781915b-a832-57be-ae4f-228737a801e0-8180744.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 95vw, (max-width: 1024px) 80vw, (max-width: 1280px) 55vw, 728px"/>

A woman walks back after collecting drinking water from a tubewell on the outskirts of Dhaka, 2016.
A.M. President Emmanuel Macron has overseen the signature of a deal to facilitate loans to Bangladesh aimed at infrastructure development, as well as a letter of intent to provide the South Asian country with an earth observation satellite system.

This came on Monday during Macron's two-day visit to Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, where he met with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to bolster bilateral relations between the two countries.

Bangladesh’s Economic Relations Division signed the agreement with the French Development Agency.

A letter of intent was also signed to provide Bangladesh with an earth observation satellite system through cooperation between Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited, or BSCL, and Airbus Defence and Space SAS, France.

Macron and Hasina witnessed the deals signed at the prime minister’s office.

Details remained unclear, with Bangladesh authorities saying they are still ironing out the details.

"The satellite that we will buy will travel through the orbit around 350 miles above the earth," Shahjahan Mahmud, chairman of the state-run Bangladesh Satellite Company Ltd, was quoted as saying. "This will be used mainly to observe the status of our crops and the sea. Currently, we don’t have any monitoring capabilities across the vast sea."

Bangladesh bought its first geostationary communications and broadcasting satellite, named Bangabandhu Satellite-1 and launched in 2018, from France where it was manufactured by Thales Alenia Space.

Bangladeshi media positively reported Macron's visit, with many seeing it as a step to bring in investments from France in sectors where the United States, China and India are heavily engaged. Some even said the visit may have a political and strategic significance ahead of Bangladesh’s next general election expected in early January.

France is Bangladesh's fifth-largest trading partner in the fields of engineering, energy, aerospace and water sectors.

"We both hope that this new strategic move between Bangladesh and France will play an effective role in establishing regional and global stability and peace," Hasina said.

Hasina said both the leaders agreed to continue to work to ensure stability in the Asia-Pacific region as well as on projects involving impacts of climate change as Bangladesh is considered to be one of the worst victims of change of weather.

She said that France has reiterated its commitment to facilitate trade with the South Asian nation under the European Union's Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) scheme, which gives developing countries incentives to pursue sustainable development and good governance.

Experts say once Bangladesh joins the GSP+ scheme, it may lose some benefits it enjoys under the World Trade Organization’s protocol as a least developed country, as it may be fully upgraded into a developing nation status.

Bangladesh has long been buying aircraft from US company Boeing, but recently the government has signed an agreement with Airbus in which France has a major stake.

Looming election

Hasina has been under pressure lately with her seeking a fourth consecutive term as prime minister.

Bangladesh's main opposition party, led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, has threatened to boycott the election if Hasina does not resign and hand over power to a caretaker government to oversee the next election. Zia's party accused her of vote rigging in 2018.

The US has been pushing for a credible election and raised questions about human rights under Hasina's rule, threatening to impose visa sanctions if the next election isn't free and fair.

Russia and China have pledged continued support to Hasina while neighboring India has maintained a cordial relationship with her.

Apart from investment and other partnerships with France, Marcon's visit is seen as a boost for Hasina in the run-up to the election.

France's President Emmanuel Macron has overseen the signature of a deal to facilitate loans to Bangladesh aimed at infrastructure development, as well as a letter of intent to provide the South Asian country with an earth observation satellite system.

Her Dhaka Art Summit is the world's largest research and exhibition platform for art from South Asia and is held biennially in Bangladesh which is celebrating its national day of independence on March 26.

Together with her husband and business partner, Samdani founded the Samdani Arts Foundation in 2011 to bring international exposure to the work of contemporary artists and architects from Bangladesh and South Asia.

In 2017, the art patrons became the first South Asians to receive the prestigious Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award which pays tribute to individuals who work behind the scenes to advance arts and culture.

Last month the power couple celebrated the sixth edition of the Dhaka Art Summit which showcased the work of 120 artists and was attended by 572,000 visitors over the course of its nine-day (free-to-visit) run. Most of the works - by local and international artists - focused on re-imagining a hopeful future inspired by the Bangladeshi experience of climate change and the country’s resilience, found both in its nature and its population.

The sixth Dhaka Art Summit

When it comes to the climate emergency, Bangladesh is one of the world’s most vulnerable countries – it is regularly hit by increasingly powerful cyclones and flooding, while rising sea levels pose nothing short of an existential crisis. It is even estimated that by 2050, one in every seven people in Bangladesh will be displaced by climate change. With these realities in mind, you’d think that an art show on climate in the country’s capital would be characterized by gloom and despair. Not so.

How do you tell the story of crises while facilitating hope? This was one of the key questions posed at this year's Dhaka Art Summit held at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

“In a world that is increasingly divided, art shows us the incredible things that humanity can create – and this brings needed hope to the world,” said Samdani.

The duality of crisis and hope was manifested in the DAS 2023’s subtitle, Bonna (meaning “flood” in Bengali, the national language of Bangladesh).

So, what is Bonna?

In Bangladesh where Bonna is also a common girls’ name, floods are not always synonymous with disaster, but could also denote promise. During the Bengali New Year, Bangladeshi people sing a popular song, Esho He Boishakh (I call on you), calling forth storm waters to wash away the ugliness of the past year. After all, as Chief Curator Diana Campbell told Euronews Culture. “Another way the word, ‘flood’, is used is floods of joy, floods of emotion.” With this viewpoint, DAS 2023 invoked visitors to interpret Bonna as a complex symbol-system.

So, too, Bonna is a child, speaking to the world from Bangladesh, questioning why the words for weather are gendered and imploring the international community to explore the connection between gender, climate change, and the built environment. Her lived experience of climate change and the unbridled potential to create change underpinned the entire program, but were particularly vivid in the summit’s headline exhibition, Very Small Feelings, a collaboration between DAS and India’s Kiran Nadar Museum of Art which gathered together stories, rituals and characters from across South Asia.

Among the many manifestations of Bonna was Gidree Bawlee Foundation for the Arts’s enchanting performance showing Bangladeshi children imagining the character of Bonna via puppetry. Similarly, local artist Yasmin Jahan Nupur’s participatory performance and space, titled Home, was an invitation to join the artist in searching for the smells, places and sensations of her childhood, while engaging in conversation about one’s own memories. After all, what better way to evoke childlike wonder than by fusing an art show with the playground? Certain works were viewed by jumping on mini trampolines or sitting on swings, infusing the exhibition experience with a sense of playfulness.

Attention seeking art

Among the first works to greet visitors was Joydeb Roaja’s immersive installation, Submerged Dream 8. It showcased the struggle of the over 100,000 indigenous Chakma people who were evicted from their ancestral land in 1962 upon the construction of the Kaptai dam. Roaja’s work portrayed dams and flooding as tools of violence against indigenous peoples. It also spoke to the unbreakable bond between indigenous communities and their lands – a weapon of resistance against oppression.

Although the “A” in DAS stands for art, the DAS 2023 displayed the work of architects as well. Found at the intersection of art and architecture, Suchi Reddy’s Between Earth and Sky set up a series of “mirages” that blurred the lines between physical constructed spaces and imagination, allowing the mind to run free to explore limitless architectural possibilities. Reddy termed this as “design justice”, where empathy and equity are reflected in the built environment.

Another architect, Rizvi Hassan, interpreted Bonna differently. Using miniature models made of regenerative materials like bamboo and thatch, he replicated the refugee camps around Cox’s Bazaar in Bangladesh where floods of Rohingya refugees seek shelter. For him, architecture has the propensity “to mitigate conflicts, to enrich the ground, or just to ensure the basic but very important needs to have a better quality of life”.

Among the most world-renowned artists taking part at DAS 2023 was Antony Gormley who returned to South Asia for the first time in 50 years for this summit. He worked with local craftspeople to create Turn: a “drawing in space” of 2.5 km of bamboo, exuding energy as it resisted containment by the building.

Rather than the “national and individual competitiveness” that Gormley believes art biennales encourage, DAS is a place of dialogue, where the ideas behind an artwork – on climate change or other questions – and the conversation they give rise to, are equally as important as the works themselves.

“At DAS, I sense that the acquisitiveness of the art fair has been replaced by another kind of exchange where the spirit of making art, rather than showing off a finished work, becomes the most valuable thing to be shared,” he told Euronews Culture.

In a country grappling with a climate emergency, Nadia Samdani is using art to tell the story of hope in times of crisis. Roaja’s work portrayed dams and flooding as tools of violence against indigenous peoples. It also spoke to the unbreakable bond between indigenous communities and their lands – a weapon of resistance against oppression.

<img class="widgetImage__image" loading="lazy" src=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////static.euronews.com//articles//stories//07//44//69//88//808x539_cmsv2_9fea2661-8d04-55ed-925f-a3aa050bdc15-7446988.jpg/" alt="Dhaka Art Summit 2023" srcset="https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/07/44/69/88/384x256_cmsv2_9fea2661-8d04-55ed-925f-a3aa050bdc15-7446988.jpg 384w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/07/44/69/88/640x427_cmsv2_9fea2661-8d04-55ed-925f-a3aa050bdc15-7446988.jpg 640w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/07/44/69/88/750x500_cmsv2_9fea2661-8d04-55ed-925f-a3aa050bdc15-7446988.jpg 750w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/07/44/69/88/828x552_cmsv2_9fea2661-8d04-55ed-925f-a3aa050bdc15-7446988.jpg 828w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/07/44/69/88/1080x720_cmsv2_9fea2661-8d04-55ed-925f-a3aa050bdc15-7446988.jpg 1080w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/07/44/69/88/1200x800_cmsv2_9fea2661-8d04-55ed-925f-a3aa050bdc15-7446988.jpg 1200w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/07/44/69/88/1920x1280_cmsv2_9fea2661-8d04-55ed-925f-a3aa050bdc15-7446988.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 95vw, (max-width: 1024px) 80vw, (max-width: 1280px) 55vw, 728px"/>

Lake of Tears by Joydeb Roaja
Dhaka Art Summit 2023

<a class="widget__gallery__image__link" href=https://www.euronews.com/"//culture//2023//03//25//meet-the-woman-behind-south-asias-largest-art-summit?gallery=be2b4eb0-c3f0-11ed-8ba0-2dd8ad82ff4e#photo-1" title="open image gallery">
<img class="widget__gallery__image" loading="lazy" src=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////static.euronews.com//articles//library//111//41//83//08//65//30//73//111418398a6d0826f6583d3023d0c962e87fc7337e7a//384x256.032_cmsv2_572f5b43-9415-58c3-a2cf-91e7373ddab6-111418398a6d0826f6583d3023d0c962e87fc7337e7a.jpg/" alt="" srcset="https://static.euronews.com/articles/library/111/41/83/08/65/30/73/111418398a6d0826f6583d3023d0c962e87fc7337e7a/384x256_cmsv2_572f5b43-9415-58c3-a2cf-91e7373ddab6-111418398a6d0826f6583d3023d0c962e87fc7337e7a.jpg 384w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/library/111/41/83/08/65/30/73/111418398a6d0826f6583d3023d0c962e87fc7337e7a/640x427_cmsv2_572f5b43-9415-58c3-a2cf-91e7373ddab6-111418398a6d0826f6583d3023d0c962e87fc7337e7a.jpg 640w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/library/111/41/83/08/65/30/73/111418398a6d0826f6583d3023d0c962e87fc7337e7a/750x500_cmsv2_572f5b43-9415-58c3-a2cf-91e7373ddab6-111418398a6d0826f6583d3023d0c962e87fc7337e7a.jpg 750w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/library/111/41/83/08/65/30/73/111418398a6d0826f6583d3023d0c962e87fc7337e7a/828x552_cmsv2_572f5b43-9415-58c3-a2cf-91e7373ddab6-111418398a6d0826f6583d3023d0c962e87fc7337e7a.jpg 828w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/library/111/41/83/08/65/30/73/111418398a6d0826f6583d3023d0c962e87fc7337e7a/1080x720_cmsv2_572f5b43-9415-58c3-a2cf-91e7373ddab6-111418398a6d0826f6583d3023d0c962e87fc7337e7a.jpg 1080w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/library/111/41/83/08/65/30/73/111418398a6d0826f6583d3023d0c962e87fc7337e7a/1200x800_cmsv2_572f5b43-9415-58c3-a2cf-91e7373ddab6-111418398a6d0826f6583d3023d0c962e87fc7337e7a.jpg 1200w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/library/111/41/83/08/65/30/73/111418398a6d0826f6583d3023d0c962e87fc7337e7a/1920x1280_cmsv2_572f5b43-9415-58c3-a2cf-91e7373ddab6-111418398a6d0826f6583d3023d0c962e87fc7337e7a.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 95vw, (max-width: 1024px) 80vw, (max-width: 1280px) 55vw, 728px"/>

<a class="widget__button u-color-white u-display-flex u-flex-direction-column u-margin-bottom-2 u-margin-bottom-medium-5 u-text-transform-none" href=https://www.euronews.com/"//culture//2023//03//25//meet-the-woman-behind-south-asias-largest-art-summit?gallery=be2b4eb0-c3f0-11ed-8ba0-2dd8ad82ff4e#photo-1" title="open image gallery">

View Gallery

6 Photos

Among the most world-renowned artists taking part at DAS 2023 was Antony Gormley who returned to South Asia for the first time in 50 years for this summit. In Bangladesh, this figure was considerably higher at 16.3 per cent.

Anxiety levels in the country were also higher (6 per cent) compared to the rest of the world (3.6 per cent).

Researchers say the findings of the study could be used to narrow down the wider effect of climate change on mental health.

“As climate change worsens, temperatures and humidity will continue to increase, as will natural disasters, such as extreme flooding, which portends worsening impact on our collective mental health, globally,” says the study’s lead author Syed Shabab Wahid, an assistant professor in the department of global health at Georgetown University’s School of Health.

Heat and humidity have an alarming effect on mental health

The study measured climate variables at 43 weather stations in Bangladesh for seasonal changes in temperature and humidity, as well as noting where people were exposed to flooding.

Two surveys were then conducted in rural and urban areas to assess depression and anxiety in adults.

It revealed that heat, humidity and climate-related events had an alarming effect on the mental health of the respondents.

People experiencing one degree Celsius higher temperatures were found to be 21 per cent more likely to have an anxiety disorder. They were also 24 per cent more likely to have both depression and anxiety together.

The study also found a link between increased humidity in the air and a higher chance of the participants reporting both depression and anxiety.

Exposure to worsening flooding linked to climate change increased the odds of poor mental health. Depression increased by 31 per cent, anxiety by 69 per cent and the presence of both conditions by 87 per cent.

Is the study a warning for other nations?

Researchers say the study isn’t enough to see the impact of major climate change but it does show how even small changes in weather linked to climate change can affect mental health .

Wahid says they now plan to conduct further research in Bangladesh and globally to “narrow down the causes and effects of climate changes on mental health.”

The study’s authors note that the findings are particularly concerning for countries where people are exposed to heat through daily labour or activities. Women , older populations and people with disabilities were especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change on mental health.

“We have now established a high-water mark that alas could soon be eclipsed for how climate can impact mental health in a highly vulnerable country,” Wahid explains.

“This should serve as a warning for other nations.”

Climate-related events have been confirmed to have a negative effect on mental health, according to new research published this week.

The study looked at the effect of heat, humidity and flooding on rates of depression and anxiety in Bangladesh - the seventh most <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2022//11//07//we-are-at-our-limit-developing-countries-score-early-win-at-cop27-with-loss-and-damage-on-/">vulnerable country in the world to climate change.

An estimated 4.4 per cent of people around the world are thought to have depression. massive fire at a container depot near a port city in southeastern Bangladesh killed at least 49 people and injured hundreds of others as firefighters struggled to get the blaze under control.

The fire at the BM Inland Container Depot, a Dutch-Bangladesh joint venture, broke out Saturday evening. As hundreds of firefighters rushed to put it out, several containers of chemicals exploded, according to emergency services.

The cause of the fire could not be immediately determined. The depot is located near the country's main Chittagong seaport, 216 kilometres southeast of the capital Dhaka.

At least five firefighters were among the dead, according to Brigadier General Main Uddin, director-general of the Bangladesh fire service and civil defence. Another 15 firefighters were being treated for burns, according to Uddin.

Multiple rounds of explosions occurred after the initial blast as the fire continued to spread, Uddin said. Another fire in Old Dhaka in a house illegally storing chemicals killed more than 120 people in 2010.

In 2021, a fire at a food and beverage factory outside Dhaka killed at least 52 people, many of whom were trapped inside by an illegally locked door.

A massive fire at a container depot near a port city in southeastern Bangladesh killed at least 49 people and injured hundreds of others as firefighters struggled to get the blaze under control.

The fire at the BM Inland Container Depot, a Dutch-Bangladesh joint venture, broke out Saturday evening. such as cancelling orders , refusal to pay for work in progress and demands for discounted prices.

It also shows how vulnerable women workers have been disproportionately affected by rising levels of gender violence, abuse and economic hardship.

‘They physically abuse us’

Shocking findings also showed an increase in sexual and verbal abuse and symbolic violence mainly from line supervisors pushing women to work faster to meet unrealistic production targets. The research found a surge in intimidation and threats, physical and sexual violence, and restriction of movement of garment workers in factories across the region.

“There are many things I dislike about the factory. The one I most dislike is the rude scolding and shouting of the supervisors. They physically abuse us by hitting or slapping us. They slap us to force us to work,” says a female RMG factory worker.

“The part that was alarming was that among female workers, pregnant women were sacked from their job because they were entitled to maternity benefits. The elderly female workers who had served more than five years were also sacked because they were entitled to service benefits, they were sacked,” adds one trade union leader.

“The majority of workers in the RMG industry in Bangladesh are women who are young, poorly educated and from rural areas with few alternative employment options. They are especially vulnerable to exploitation,” says project lead Muhammad Azizul Islam, Professor in Sustainability Accounting and Transparency at the University of Aberdeen Business School.

Legal protection for women workers meanwhile is limited, as are the grievance mechanisms in place. Those which do exist were said to be often disregarded with impunity by many factory owners and managers.

“During pandemic time, workers could not afford to be sacked. These devastating impacts were heightened and, in some cases, directly caused by retailers and brands selling into the UK and other markets in the Global North.”

The in-depth research saw face to face interviews carried out with female and male garment workers, factory managers, industry leaders and trade unions over the course of eight months between November 2020 and July 2021. The interviews were conducted alongside discussions with a number of development agencies and international advocacy NGOs.

It found that some employers refused to let workers return after lockdown.

Most who did return said they had been forced to sign new contracts, losing access to benefits and protection they had previously accrued.

The RMG industry is the mainstay of the Bangladesh economy, accounting for 85 per cent of export earnings, about 20 per cent of GDP and directly employing about four million workers, with more than 12 million people in total dependent on the sector.

Slipping through the cracks

Although most RMG factories in Bangladesh are signed up to the international frameworks for promoting gender equality, including in employment, researchers found there are significant gaps in the labour laws. Even when international frameworks have been incorporated into domestic law, they are disregarded by many employers and rarely enforced.

Compliance audits in factories carried out by companies were found to be largely ineffective, with around 20 per cent of social compliance auditors not including women's equal rights issues in their audits, and 40 per cent not auditing the right to trade union recognition.

“UK retailers and brands should consider only sourcing products from suppliers with policies and mechanisms in place that protect workers’ rights and address gender harassment, abuse and gender discrimination. They should also require independent audits, covering both manufacturers and sub-contractors, to include this as a priority,” adds Professor Islam.

Fiona Gooch, senior private sector policy advisor with Traidcraft Exchange UK says that UK fashion brands’ purchasing practices are among the most abusive and least regulated in the world.

“A key recommendation in this report is that the UK set up a fashion watchdog to stop abusive practices in their supply chains. This would help protect garment workers in Bangladesh and other countries, including the UK, from having to risk working in abusive and unsafe situations, where conditions sometimes resemble slavery.”

The report calls for UK retailers and brands to find mechanisms to eliminate the exploitation of workers in the supply chains that supply them with products. But it’s clear that this isn’t just a case of regulation saving the day. The unrelenting pace of the global fashion industry and consumption across the Global North has left garment workers paying the price - pandemic or no pandemic.

Brands must take responsibility for all elements of their supply chains and the pressure they place upon the workers within them to produce at such intense rates.

Women working in the Bangladesh garment industry have borne the brunt of the devastating impacts of the COVID health crisis, according to new findings.

A study published today by researchers at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, and trade justice charity Traidcraft Exchange UK, unearths the truth around who is being hit hardest by the pandemic.

The research reveals the repercussions of COVID-19 and consequent actions taken by Western retailers - <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2020//07//10//exploitation-and-sweatshops-are-at-the-core-of-fast-fashion-it-s-time-to-dismantle-the-sys/">such as cancelling orders, refusal to pay for work in progress and demands for discounted prices.

It also shows how vulnerable women workers have been disproportionately affected by rising levels of gender violence, abuse and economic hardship.

<img class="widgetImage__image" loading="lazy" src=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////static.euronews.com//articles//stories//06//42//35//38//808x539_cmsv2_0e62d199-3f6d-5183-87f0-7d6b16771e29-6423538.jpg/" alt="MUNIR UZ ZAMAN/AFP or licensors" srcset="https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/06/42/35/38/384x256_cmsv2_0e62d199-3f6d-5183-87f0-7d6b16771e29-6423538.jpg 384w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/06/42/35/38/640x427_cmsv2_0e62d199-3f6d-5183-87f0-7d6b16771e29-6423538.jpg 640w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/06/42/35/38/750x500_cmsv2_0e62d199-3f6d-5183-87f0-7d6b16771e29-6423538.jpg 750w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/06/42/35/38/828x552_cmsv2_0e62d199-3f6d-5183-87f0-7d6b16771e29-6423538.jpg 828w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/06/42/35/38/1080x720_cmsv2_0e62d199-3f6d-5183-87f0-7d6b16771e29-6423538.jpg 1080w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/06/42/35/38/1200x800_cmsv2_0e62d199-3f6d-5183-87f0-7d6b16771e29-6423538.jpg 1200w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/06/42/35/38/1920x1280_cmsv2_0e62d199-3f6d-5183-87f0-7d6b16771e29-6423538.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 95vw, (max-width: 1024px) 80vw, (max-width: 1280px) 55vw, 728px"/>

Workers from the garment sector block a road during a protest to demand payment of due wages, in Dhaka.
MUNIR UZ ZAMAN/AFP or licensors

Related

<a class="c-widget-related__article" href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2021//07//02//eu-fashion-brands-found-to-be-lying-about-the-sustainability-of-their-fabrics/">EU fast fashion brands found to be lying about the sustainability of their fabrics

<a class="c-widget-related__article" href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2020//10//24//woke-washing-how-fast-fashion-brands-use-social-issues-for-sales/">Woke-washing: How fast fashion brands use social issues for sales

<a class="c-widget-related__article" href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2020//11//14//one-romanian-garment-worker-breaks-her-silence-on-covid-19-pay-cuts/">One Romanian garment worker breaks her silence on COVID-19 pay cuts

‘They physically abuse us’

Shocking findings also showed an increase in sexual and verbal abuse and symbolic violence mainly from line supervisors pushing women to work faster to meet unrealistic production targets.
