The attack comes as Israel enters the second week of military operations in the West Bank.

At least two Israeli soldiers were killed early on Tuesday after a gunman opened fire at an Israeli military post in the occupied West Bank, according to Israeli officials.

The Israeli military said the soldiers returned fire and the Palestinian gunman was later killed.

Eight other soldiers were injured, two of whom are in critical condition.

The attack near Tayasir in the Jordan Valley comes as the Israeli military enters the second week of their extensive military operation in the West Bank, which started right after the temporary ceasefire agreement went into effect in Gaza.

On Sunday, the Israeli military detonated dozens of buildings in the Jenin refugee camp. Israel said they were trying to clamp down on militant activity.

The West Bank has seen a surge in violence since the start of the war in Gaza in 2023, which was triggered after the Iran-backed militant group Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7 in 2023.

The Israeli military has carried out near-daily arrest raids that often spark gunbattles.

There has also been a rise in Palestinian attacks on Israelis and of settler violence against Palestinians.
